Heavy Burger

FEB 2023 - APR 2023

MY ROLE - UX DESIGNER + RESEARCHER

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Conducting interviews, paper and digital wireframing, low and high-fidelity prototyping, conducting usability studies, accounting for accessibility, and iterating on designs.

THE PROJECT

Heavy Burger is a popular gastro-bar with a full-fledged kitchen that has grown from a small burger joint. They offer affordable prices for their high-quality food and are always happy to welcome old and new customers alike. Heavy Burger caters to busy individuals who want to enjoy a satisfying meal without having to worry about preparing it themselves.

THE CHALLENGE

As the popularity of Heavy Burger grew, they noticed that more and more customers were ordering their food online through their app.

As a result, Heavy Burger decided to redesign its app to improve the user experience and make it easier for customers to order their signature burgers.

THE GOAL

To redesign the Heavy Burger app to improve the ordering process and overall user experience, making it easier for busy customers to place orders for pickup or delivery, while also increasing revenue for the business.

RESEARCH & PLANNING

I conducted user research to better understand the needs and pain points of Heavy Burger's target audience. Through interviews and empathy maps, it became clear that busy individuals who prioritize convenience and affordability are a primary user group for the fast food app redesign.

However, further research revealed that time constraints are not the only challenge facing these users. Other factors, such as work obligations, personal interests, and logistical challenges, can also prevent them from dining out in person. By identifying these additional user problems, the redesign project can aim to provide a more comprehensive solution that addresses the needs of Heavy Burger's diverse customer base.

PERSONAS

Heavy Burger App Bill Persona

Bill is a responsible and conservative person who prefers to plan ahead, and who needs easy access to quality food ordering options at an affordable price because he is striving to maximize the use of his time and resources.

Tanisha is a visually impaired university student who needs an accessible and user-friendly platform that can help her discover new restaurants and menu options, as well as access discounts and deals, without feeling overwhelmed or frustrated by the interface.

The simplest starting point was to survey the target users to learn about the mobile apps that consume most of their screen time.

Finally, I asked them to use their imaginations - what if there was an app they could use to order fast food? What would it look like, and how do they think it should work?

The data I collected from my research helped me craft 2 personas embodying 2 different customer archetypes in my target user group.

Many of my design decisions were made with Bill in mind. If I could design an app with an engaging experience for responsible and conservative individuals like Bill, they could easily access quality food ordering options at an affordable price. By catering to busy people like Bill who strive to maximize their time and resources, I can ensure that they can enjoy a satisfying meal without the worry of preparing it themselves. This approach allows me to meet the needs of other users as well, creating a seamless and enjoyable experience for all customers, both old and new. In doing so, I aim to make the Heavy Burger app a go-to choice for individuals like Bill, offering them convenience and value every time they order their favorite meal.

DESIGNING THE SOLUTION

USER FLOWS & Early sketches

Based on my research, I focused on addressing the pain points of working adults like Bill when designing the Heavy Burger app. To save time for busy individuals, I prioritized a quick and easy ordering process on the home screen. Additionally, I ensured that the app is equipped with assistive technologies to enhance accessibility, making it user-friendly for all.

Affordability was another key concern for working adults, so I made sure to provide affordable meal options through the app. To address the lack of information, I included access to nutritional information and meal planning resources, empowering users like Bill to make informed choices about their meals.

By considering and addressing these pain points in the app's design, I aimed to create a seamless and convenient experience for users like Bill. With a user-friendly interface, accessible features, affordable options, and valuable information, the Heavy Burger app becomes a go-to solution for working adults looking for a satisfying and convenient meal experience without the hassle of meal preparation.

Usability study: findings

I conducted two rounds of usability studies. Findings from the first study helped guide the designs from wireframes to mockups. The second study used a high-fidelity prototype and revealed what aspects of the mockups needed refining.

Round 1 findings:

  1. Users want to order dishes quickly

  2. Users want more add-ons to the order

  3. Users suggested displaying the address editing option more prominently.

Round 2 findings:

  1. Users want more sign up options via social media

Before usability studies

After usability studies

Early designs allowed for some customization, but after the usability studies, I added additional options to add drinks or similar add-ons. I also revised the design so users see all nutritional value when they first land on the screen.

During the second round of testing, users reported that they found the new buttons much more user-friendly and were able to sign up without any issues. This change helped improve overall user satisfaction with the app.

Key takeaways

The app makes users feel like Heavy Burger really thinks about how to meet their needs.

One quote from peer feedback:

“The app made it so easy and fun to order a unique burger set! I would definitely use this app as a go-to for a delicious, fast, and even healthy meal.”

Next steps
  • Conduct another round of usability studies to validate whether the pain points users experienced have been effectively addressed.

  • Conduct more user research to determine any new areas of need.
